This was a rocket plume intercept flight. An Athena II rocket carrying a commercial imaging satellite was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Shortly afterwards, the NASA WB-57 aircraft flew though the rocket's exhaust plume six times at an altitude of about 18 km. The solid rocket booster on Athena II contained aluminum and chlorine, which was visible in the spectra obtained by PALMS. To view select spectra in the plumes, use the plume crossings plot below.
